Marks Blog - "Come say G'day"

I took my son Zac down to his footy trial game on Sunday morning, it was played at Kotara. In the time I was there I had 5 or 6 people come up and politely ask me how I was going. It was a real reminder to me of where I have been, and most importantly the community support I have received. It’s been almost two years since I had my life changing surgery, time goes fast!

I remember when my situation was first revealed in the Newcastle Herald, I wasn't sure if I wanted to go out in busy places. My family love walking down to Merewether Surfhouse. We would get a coffee and let the kids run around. This was the first place I went out with my family once my illness went public. I cautiously walked down, not quite sure how I was going to feel or how people may react to me. I should have known better! The people of Newcastle and elsewhere have been great.

It was business as usual (coffees, milkshakes and the kids wanting more!) for the Hughes family. And my journey since then has been that way. There is no doubt about it…. people do care. I do constantly get asked how I am going. I get a lot of positive comments on how I Iook, people say I look fit with some even saying fit enough to play again!!! No thank you.

The only time I feel a little awkward is when people press me about my condition in front of the kids, Children absorb more than you realise and I don't want them worrying about me. I guess the point I’m trying to make is that I do draw much strength from the support of so many great people. So if you ever see me around come up and say g’day….. It would be great to meet you.
